New Work Permit for MPNP Program Candidates

Special Work Permits are available for MPNP Program Candidates

The MPNP Program has recently undergone some crucial changes. Under this update, specific candidates are eligible to apply for work permits, which will help them avoid losing their status.

Manitoba will give this special work permit to most eligible candidates for up to two years. In this article, we will provide all the information regarding the new update for Manitoba PNP applicants. But before proceeding, let’s find out why the Canadian government made these changes.

Why did the Canadian government implement these changes in the MPNP Program?

The Manitoba PNP program is an integral part of the province’s plan to attract world-class professionals.

The candidate in the pool of expression of interest, though, frequently finds it difficult when their Canadian work permit expires before receiving the Notification of Interest.

In response to these problems, the Manitoba government, in cooperation with IRCC, has implemented a temporary public policy.

To assist the most deserving candidates in obtaining work permit extensions.

Eligibility Requirements of the Manitoba Specific Work Permit

Candidates are must meet the following specific requirements, to qualify for the MPNP Program’s specific work permit:

  1. An applicant must have a valid work permit that will expire in 45 days or a previously held work permit that has expired in 2024 or 2025.
  2. Applicants have always lived in Manitoba as of January 15, 2025.
  3. Applicants who had a valid MPNP expression of interest profile as of January 15, 2025, at the time of submission.
  4. Candidates must also provide a valid employment letter from their current employer in Manitoba.

Federal regulations imposed by the IRCC under the temporary public policy bind applicants.  Candidates must have a valid work permit and may request an extension or restoration of their status if their work permit was terminated after May 7, 2025.

Application process of the Manitoba-specific work permit

From April 22, 2025, interested candidates can apply for a support letter from the MPNP by filling out the online application form.

The support letter is one of the essential documents to use in applying to the IRCC for this particular work permit.

In addition, the MPNP Program will accept such applications until December 31, 2025, a date that overlaps with the expiry date of the federal temporary public policy.

Applicants should also provide the following documents to the immigration officials:

  • A copy of the existing work permit, documentation of authorisation to work in Manitoba, or documentation of possession of a valid work permit as of May 7, 2024, as well as documentation of having made an application to restore temporary resident status.
  • A valid MPNP expression of Interest profile
  • A valid employment letter from a Manitoba employer.

However, applicants must know that a work permit is not guaranteed, as the Manitoba government can limit their issuance.

Rational behind this change

This program is a reflection of Manitoba’s commitment to supporting qualified workers who contribute to the province’s economy. By extending work permits for eligible candidates, Manitoba will retain talent and ensure labor market continuity.

This policy also aligns with IRCC’s broader goal of converting temporary residents into permanent residents and steadying the immigration system, as well as filling labor gaps.

For applicants, this policy provides a valuable window of opportunity to maintain their legal status and work until nomination decisions are announced. The policy also places a premium on building applications on time and adhering to provincial and federal regulations.

Conclusion

The MPNP Program’s specific work permits were brought into the country by IRCC and Manitoba to address labor market shortages.

Applications will be prepared in advance by qualified candidates to ensure compliance with the requirements and to provide the necessary details within the specified timeframe.
